SpaceOAR

Protects healthy tissue during radiotherapy for prostate cancer—a hydrogel that reduces the risk of long-term side effects on bowel, bladder, and sexual function.

Tissue protection during prostate treatment

OVERVIEW

What is SpaceOAR?

SpaceOAR (Spacing Organs At Risk) is designed to protect the rectum in men undergoing radiotherapy treatment for prostate cancer. It is a biodegradable hydrogel that is placed between the prostate and the rectum, injected under ultrasound guidance, and completely absorbed by the body after approximately seven months.

By creating a space of 1–1.3 cm between the prostate and the rectum, a high radiation dose to the prostate is made possible while protecting the bowel and the bulb of the penis—which results in better preservation of bowel and sexual function after treatment. SpaceOAR also enables ultra-hypofractionation and dose scaling.

Why SpaceOAR?

Protects healthy tissue

Creates distance between the prostate and rectum, thereby minimizing the radiation dose to healthy tissue without compromising the treatment of the tumor.

Fewer side effects

Reduces the risk of lasting side effects on the bowel, bladder, and sexual function — quality of life that persists long after treatment.

Well-documented

Backed by several published clinical studies, including randomized trials and meta-analyses.

What SpaceOAR Offers

Perirectal hydrogel

Biodegradable hydrogel injected between the prostate and rectum, stable in shape and size for about three months and completely absorbed after seven. Creates a 1–1.3 cm distance, enabling a higher radiation dose to the prostate while protecting the bowel and penile bulb.
